THE UNSEEN MOVIES FESTΙVAL
(20-23 Δεκεμβρίου σε διαφορετικά σημεία της Αθήνας)

Το «The Unseen Movies Festival» είναι ένα φεστιβάλ ταινιών από την ομάδα του Pugnant Film Series, πιστό στις αρχές του DIY. Πρόκειται για μία επιλογή και προβολή ταινιών σύγχρονης παραγωγής (2015-2016) από τις χιλιάδες ταινίες που δεν βρήκαν τρόπο να φτάσουν στις Αθηναϊκές αίθουσες. Στο πρόγραμμα μπορεί να βρει κανείς ταινίες ετερόκλητου ύφους, θεματολογίας και αισθητικής. Ταινίες με σημαντική αναγνώριση σε παγκόσμια φεστιβάλ ή και όχι. Ταινίες που μ’ έναν ανοιχτό τρόπο είναι προσκείμενες στο είδος του «χειροποίητου» κινηματογράφου που μας ενδιαφέρει.

Στο «The Unseen Movies Festival» θα βρείτε ταινίες απ’ όλο τον κόσμο. Ταινίες «αθέατες», καθώς επί το πλείστον πρόκειται για ταινίες που δεν υποκύπτουν στις επορικές προτεραιότητες μίας αίθουσας ή στην εξίσωση ενός εξωστρεφή καλλιτεχνικού δικτύου. Ταινίες που πρωτίστως συνοψίζουν την πηγαία ανάγκη για έκφραση. Μία ταινία υπάρχει μόνο  κατά τη στιγμή που προβάλλεται και γίνεται ορατή. Είναι ίσως η μόνη στιγμή εκπλήρωσης για το κινηματογραφικό έργο. Και στο «The Unseen Movies Festival» θα προβάλουμε σημαντικές ταινίες που δεν έχουν ξανά προβληθεί στην Αθήνα. Πέραν απ’ όλα αυτά τα ίσως σπουδαιοφανή, στο Pugnant Film Series χρωστάμε απλή ανθρώπινη ευγνωμοσύνη σε όλους τους δημιουργούς και παραγωγούς που ανταποκρίθηκαν στο κάλεσμά μας και παραχώρησαν τις ταινίες τους για να μπορέσει αυτό το φεστιβάλ να συμβεί. Όπως και σ’ όλους τους χώρους (Αυτοδιαχειριζόμενο Θέατρο Εμπρός, Balkan Can Kino, Boiler και Χίμαιρες) που στεγάζουν το πρόγραμμά μας.

Στις 20-23 Δεκεμβρίου 15 ταινίες σε πρώτη προβολή. Ακολουθεί το πρόγραμμα συνοπτικά και αναλυτικά!

Το Pugnant Film Series είναι ένας μη κερδοσκοπικός (μη) οργανισμός που διοργανώνει προβολές underground, dada και του κινηματογράφου των auteur στην Αθήνα και την Ελλάδα γενικότερα.

THE UNSEEN MOVIES FESTΙVAL
(20-23 December in various spots in Athens)

The “The Unseen Movies Festival” is a film festival by the Pugnant Film Series group, keeping loyal to the principles of DIY. A selection of recent film productions (2015-2016), which were selected from thousands of films, never having made it to the Athenian cinemas, will be screened. The film line-up includes films varying in style, subject and aesthetic. The schedule includes films, which have been acknowledged in international festivals and others with limited impact or distribution. In a general basis, we selected the films of our program according to our preference in the “handmade” cinema.   

In the “The Unseen Movies Festival” you will find films from around the world. “Unseen” films, as they do not succumb to the commercial requirements of a screening room or to those of an extroverted PR-dominated art network, in their majority. Films, which primarily portray the innate need for expression. A film comes into existence at the point when it is screened and thus becomes visible. The point of its screening, might be the only point in time when it has fulfilled it cinematographic opus. We will be showing important films, which have never before been exposed to an Athenian audience. Moreover, in Pugnant Film Series, we feel we owe simple human gratitude to all the artists and producers who responded to our call for them to share their films, making this festival possible. We also owe gratitude to all the people behind the venues (Embros Free self-Theater, Balkan Can Kino, Boiler and Chimeres), which will host this festival.

Between December 20 and 23, the first screening for 15 films will take place. Please see below for an analytical schedule!

18.00 Opening Film

Ένα από τα πιο εντυπωσιακά γαλλόφωνα ντεμπούτο για το 2016. Στην καρδιά αυτής της ταινίας η άβυσσος των σχέσεων μεταξύ ενός άντρα και της μητέρας του.

One of the most impressive French language feature debut for 2016. A film which is

based in the theme of the strange and nervous relations between a man and his

mother.

19:40 The Movement (2015, Αργεντινή/Νότια Κορέα, 70’)

1835. Η αναρχία και οι βασανισμοί βασιλεύουν στα πάμπας της Αργεντινής. Ένας άντρας, αδίσταχτος και χαρισματικός μαζί, ταξιδεύει στα εδάφη των γκάουτσο αναζητώντας νεοσυλλέκτους για το πολιτικό του κίνημα. Το ερώτημα είναι: τι θα κάνει αυτός ο άντρας με την αυξανόμενη δύναμή του;

1835. Anarchy and plagues reign in the Argentine pampas. A man, at once ruthless and

charismatic, travels through gaucho territory in search of recruits for his political movement.

The question is: what will this man do with his growing power?

21:00 Roukli (2015, Εσθονία, 100’)

 Μία μικρή αγροτική κοινότητα βρίσκεται στο χείλος ενός μαινόμενου πολέμου. Οι ζωές των φοβισμένων ντόπιων κλονίζονται από την άφιξη δύο αντρών, φυγάδων από το μυστηριώδες, εκδικητικό Peedu.

A small farm community is on the brink of getting swallowed by raging war. Lives of the
frightened locals get shaken by the arrival of two men on the run from the mysterious,
apparently vengeful Peedu. Following events delve into the fine ties of human relationships and
the meaning of individual existence lurking behind them. A seemingly pessimistic premise of
the film slowly turns into something much more complex – a work that depicts the frailty of
deep human connection and reaffirms it as a legitimate possibility once we learn to let go.

22:50 Song in the night (2016, Ισπανία, 68’)

Όταν ο Hernán και η Marta πρέπει να περάσουν έναν μεγάλο, χιονισμένο χειμώνα μακριά, ψάχνουν να βρουν έναν δημιουργικό τρόπο για να μείνει ο ένας στη ζωή του άλλου. Αυτός αρχίζει να συλλέγει τυχαίες σκέψεις και να τις βάζει σε ένα βίντεο-ημερολόγιο, σε μία προσπάθεια να χρησιμοποιήσει την τέχνη για να γεμίσει τα κενά της ζωής τους.

 

When Hernán and Marta have to spend a long, snowy winter apart, they search for a creative

way to stay in each other’s lives. He starts collecting random thoughts and putting together a

video diary in an attempt to use art to fill the holes in the fabric of their lives. For their

intimacy to survive, he has to patiently and carefully observe the textures and sounds of

nature, of buildings, of people he meets, until the foreign environment starts to become

familiar. Like a piece of music that develops from one movement to the next, the film—fueled

by a deep longing— grows and develops, as the observations, originally meant only for the eyes

of a far-off loved one, begins to turn into honest self-observation.

18:00 Parable of the Return (2016, Κολομβία, 41’)

Ο Wilson αφήνει το σπίτι του στο Μεδεγίν της Κολομβίας πηγαίνοντας στην Μποκοτά, αλλά δεν

φτάνει ποτέ στον προορισμό του. 30 χρόνια αργότερα (ύστερα από τις ειρηνευτικές συμφωνίες με το FARC) επιστρέφει από την εξορία του στο Λονδίνο για να συναντήσει την οικογένειά του που νόμιζε για νεκρή. Το ταξίδι με το αεροπλάνο σχηματίζει μία παραβολή ακριβώς όπως το ποίημα του

Porfirio Barba Jaco.

Wilson left home in Medellin (Colombia) on his way to Bogota but he never arrived to his destination. 30 years later after the peace agreements with the FARC, he returns from his exile in London to meet his family who believe him dead. The plane journey shapes a parable just like the title of the poem by Porfirio Barba Jaco

18:50 Muito Romântico (2015, Γερμανία/Βραζιλία, 72’)

Η περιπέτεια της Melissa και του Gustavo ξεκινάει από την επιβίβασή τους σε ένα κόκκινο φορτηγό πλοίο για να διασχίσουν τον Ατλαντικό. Φτάνουν στο Βερολίνο, μία πόλη συνεχούς κίνησης, όπου το παλιό πρέπει να δώσει τη θέση του στο καινούργιο. Το ζευγάρι βρίσκει ένα σπίτι και το μετασχηματίζει στο κέντρο του δικού τους σύμπαντος. Το Muito Romântico είναι ένα συνεχές ανακάτεμα εμπειριών, αναμνήσεων και φαντασιών σε ένα ταξίδι που υπερβαίνει τον χώρο και τον χρόνο.

 

The adventure of Melissa and Gustavo starts aboard a red cargo ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean. It takes them to Berlin, a city of constant movement, where the old has to give space to the new. The couple finds a home and transforms it into the center of their own universe. Muito Romântico is a playful rearrangement of experiences, memories and fantasies into a journey transcending space and time.

20:10 Oscuro Animal (2016, Κολομβία/Αργεντινή/Ολλανδία, 107’)

 Η ταινία διηγείται την ιστορία τριών γυναικών που εξαναγκάστηκαν να αφήσουν τα σπίτια τους

σε μία εμπόλεμη περιοχή της Κολομβίας. Το ταξίδι καθεμίας γυναίκας, σημαδεμένο από τον τρόμο,

τους οδηγεί σε ένα μονοπάτι από τα βάθη της ζούγκλας μέχρι τα περίχωρα της Μποκοτά, όπου

καθεμία πρέπει να βρει τη δύναμη που χρειάζεται για να ξεκινήσει μία καινούργια ζωή.

 

The film tells the story of three women forced to flee their homes in a war-torn region of

Colombia. Each woman’s journey, marked by terror, takes her on a trek from the depths of the

jungle to the outskirts of Bogotá, where each must gather the strength needed to start a new

life.

 

22:15 Dead Slow Ahead (2015, Ισπανία/Γαλλία, 74’)

Ένα φορτηγό διασχίζει τον ωκεανό. Ο υπνωτικός ρυθμός του βήματός του αποκαλύπτει τη συνεχή κίνηση των μηχανών που καταβροχθίζουν τους εργάτες του: οι χειρονομίες των παλιών ναυτικών εξαφανίζονται κάτω από τον μηχανικό και απρόσωπο παλμό του νεοκαπιταλισμού του 21ου αιώνα. Ίσως πρόκειται για ένα ανεμοδαρμένο πλοίο, ή απλά για το τελευταίο παράδειγμα ενός απειλούμενου είδους με κινητήρες που εξακολουθούν να δουλεύουν, ασταμάτητοι.

  

A freighter crosses the ocean. The hypnotic rhythm of its pace reveals the continuous

movement of the machinery devouring its workers: the old sailors’ gestures disappearing

under the mechanical and impersonal pulse of the 21st century neo-capitalism. Perhaps it is a

boat adrift, or maybe just the last example of an endangered species with engines still

running, unstoppable.

18:00 Seat in Shadow (2015, Αγγλία/Ισπανία, 75’)

Ο Albert είναι ένας εκκεντρικός, ηλικιωμένος ζωγράφος που δουλεύει ως ένας αντισυμβατικός ψυχοθεραπευτής, εμπνευσμένος από τον Γιούνγκ. Όταν μια φίλη του ζητά να παρακολουθήσει τον εγγονό της Ben, του οποίου τα προβλήματα με τον φίλο του τροφοδοτούν ήδη μία βαθιά

κατάθλιψη, οι συνεδρίες αποκαλύπτουν τόσα για τον Albert όσα και για τον Ben.

Albert is an eccentric, ageing painter who doubles as an unconventional, Jung-inspired

psychotherapist. When his friend asks him to counsel her grandson Ben, whose boyfriend

problems are fuelling an already deep depression, their subsequent therapy sessions reveal

as much about Albert as they do about Ben.

19:30 Baden Baden (2016, Γαλλία/Βέλγιο, 96’)

Η Ana, 26 χρονών, εργάζεται ως βοηθός παραγωγής σε μία ταινία στο Βέλγιο. Μισεί αυτή την δουλειά. Όταν τελειώσει η ταινία, αντί να γυρίσει στο Λονδίνο, αποφασίζει να κρατήσει το αυτοκίνητο της παραγωγής και να πάει προς το Στρασβούργο, την πόλη που μεγάλωσε.

Ana, 26 years old, finishes a job she hates as runner on a big film shoot in Belgium. Instead of

returning to London, she makes an impulsive decision to keep the production’s rental car and

heads to Strasbourg, the town she grew up in. Once there, she gives herself a mission; to

replace her grandmother’s bath with a floor level shower, better adapted to someone her age.

Over the course of a summer, during which a broken love affair briefly blossoms again and

Ana’s grandmother is hospitalised with a broken hip, Ana does her best to cope with life.

 

21:30 Ι, Olga Hepnarova (2016, Τσεχία/Πολωνία/Σλοβακία/Γαλλία, 105’)

Το 1973, η Olga Hepnarová, μόλις 22 χρονών, σκότωσε 8 ανθρώπους, όταν χτύπησε μία στάση του τραμ της Πράγας με ένα φορτηγό. Είδε την πράξη της αυτή σαν εκδίκηση προς την κοινωνία που την απέκλειε. Οδηγούμενοι από τα γράμματα της Olga, διεισδύουμε στην ψυχή της και γινόμαστε μάρτυρες της μοναξιάς και αποξένωσης καθώς ανακατασκευάζουμε τα γεγονότα που οδήγησαν στην πράξη της.

 

In 1973, young Olga Hepnarová killed eight people when she drove a truck into a tram stop in

Prague. She saw this ruthless deed as an act of revenge against the society which kept

hurting her.Guided by her letters we delve into Olga’s psyche and witness the worsening of

her loneliness and alienation as we re-construct the events that led up to her actions.

Ύστερα από μία μεγάλη περιπλάνηση, ένας άντρας και μια γυναίκα βρίσκουν καταφύγιο σε ένα απομονωμένο σπίτι στο βουνό. Ελπίζουν να σώσουν τους εαυτούς τους υιοθετώντας μία

ουσιώδη, σχεδόν πρωτόγονη ζωή. Η φύση τους επιβλέπει, παρατηρώντας τους από ψηλά.

Τα πάντα ρέουν, τα πάντα αλλάζουν, τα πάντα βρίσκονται σε μετασχηματισμό. Είναι

αρκετή η αποφυγή των ανθρώπων για την αποφυγή του θανάτου;

In Greek mythology Ananke is the goddess that represents the personification or power of

fate. In an imaginary present, humanity faces extinction because of a terrible pandemic. The

only way to escape death is to avoid all contact with human beings, to flee, to be completely

alone. After long wandering a man and a woman find shelter in an isolated house in the

mountains. They hope to save themselves by adapting to an essential, almost primitive life.

Nature watches over them, observing them from above. Everything flows, everything changes,

everything is in transformation. Is avoiding man enough to avoid death?

19:20 Poet on a business trip (2015, Κίνα, 103’)

Το φθινόπωρο του 2002, ένας ποιητής που δεν έχει ταξιδέψει ποτέ, αποφασίζει να πάει στο Σιντσιάνγκ, 4000 χιλιόμετρα μακριά. Εντελώς μόνος, ταξιδεύει με διάφορα μέσα και μένει στα πιο φθηνά μοτέλ, συναντώντας βουνά, δάση, λίμνες, ερήμους και εθνικά σύνορα. Φαινομενικά χωρίς σκοπό αναζητά γραφικά μέρη και πόρνες, και κατά τη διάρκεια των μοναχικών και παράλογων ταξιδιών του, βρίσκει τον εαυτό του να μετατοπίζεται συνεχώς μεταξύ τοπίων και σωμάτων. Στον δρόμο γράφει δεκαέξι ποιήματα.

In the autumn of 2002, a poet who has never been away on a business trip decides to take

himself to Xinjiang, 4000 kilometers away. Completely alone, he travels by many different

modes of transportation and stays in the cheapest motels, encountering mountains, forests,

lakes, deserts, and national borders along the way. Seemingly aimless, he seeks scenic places

and prostitutes, and during his solitary and absurd travels, he finds himself constantly

shifting between landscapes and bodies. On the road, he composes sixteen poem

21:10 Revengeance (2016, ΗΠΑ, 71’)

Ένας γερουσιαστής, πρώην μηχανόβιος, και ένας κυνηγός επικηρυγμένων που είναι λίγο παιδί της μαμάς: ο Bill Plympton (σκηνοθέτης) και ο Jim Lujan (σεναριογράφος) παίζουν με τα

κλισέ και την ποπ κουλτούρα για να σατιρίσουν την Αμερικανική κοινωνία. Η ταινία είναι τολμηρή και διαπεραστική, και εναλλάσσεται αβίαστα από το σκοτάδι και την καταστροφή, στην εκρηκτική ενέργεια.

An ex-biker senator and a bounty hunter who is a bit of a mummy’s boy: director Bill Plympton

(animation) and Jim Lujan (screenplay) play with clichés and pop culture to shine a satirical

light on US-American society. The film is bold and piercing, switching effortlessly from gloom

and doom to explosive energy.

 

23:00 Closing film
 

Η ταινία που κλείνει το φεστιβάλ είναι μία από τις τελευταίες ταινίες του ίσως πιο παραγωγικού
σύγχρονου Ιάπωνα σκηνοθέτη. Συνδεμένος με τις πιο ψυχεδελικές μας εμπειρίες. Κι αυτή η ταινία δεν
είναι παρά μια ωδή στο soft-core πορνό, ένα είδος το οποίο φλερτάρει συνεχώς στην φιλμογραφία του.

The closing film of the festival is one of the last films by one of the most active Japanese directors. He is connected with many of our most psychedelic film experiences. This is a film tribute to the soft-core porn films, a genre that he loves and likes to film anyway!
